世界初の無人自立型海洋ロボット、ウェーブ・グライダーが、先般の史上最大級のハリケーン《サンディ》の来襲下でも故障せずに、リアルタイムのデータを気象学者たちに送り続けたのが話題になっている。最新鋭のコンピューターを装備し、波のエネルギーとソーラーパネルからの電源で動くこの革新的なロボットは、巨大なハリケーンが来ているニュージャージー州の海岸でまず配置に就き、風速80マイル（約128km）の強風といった記録的な気象データを採取した。米国海洋大気庁（NOAA）は、気象学者の嵐に関する知識を一層増強するために、いずれ同様のロボットの多数投入する「戦隊」を作り上げるプランもあるという。
Wave Glider robot survives Hurricane Sandy
The Wave Glider, the world’s first unmanned autonomous marine robot, streamed realtime data to meteorologists during Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record. Deployed off the coast of New Jersey during the storm, the innovative robot – equipped with sophisticated computers and powered by a combination of wave energy and solar panels – recorded winds as high as 80 miles per hour. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) plans to eventually employ fleets of these robots to help meteorologists improve their understanding of storms.
