If you’re curious about cultural differences, I highly recommend the Cultural Comparison Tool at the Hofstede Insights website.
Just select 1 to 4 countries in the dropdown menu and a bar graph will immediately appear along with written descriptions comparing your selected countries in 6 dimensions. The information is based on Professor Geert Hofstede’s 6-D Model and can be extremely insightful at times.
In a comparison between Japan, China and the United States, for example, the results are quite eye opening. China and the United States are similar in the Masculinity dimension, China and Japan are similar in the Long Term Orientation dimension, and all three countries are dramatically different in the Power Distance, Individualism and Indulgence dimensions.
These dramatic differences are sobering when you consider how easily they can lead to miscommunication, misunderstandings and disagreements between people from the world’s three biggest economies.
One of the first steps to overcoming differences in cross-cultural communication – and building a world of lasting peace and harmony – is recognizing those differences. The Cultural Comparison Tool at the Hofstede Insights website is an excellent start.
