What is Flash in the first place?
Flash is a standard for handling dynamic elements such as animations and games. It was widely used in the early 2000s because it allowed high-quality animations to be created relatively easily. For example, it could be used to make glowing menus, animated buttons, mini games and more on websites. In some cases, entire sites were made from Flash.
But the inability to run Flash animations on iPhones became a problem as iPhones became popular.
How can I provide similar functionality without using Flash?
If you are using Flash to play movies, you can place the movies on a video distribution site like YouTube instead to enable playback without Flash. If you are using Flash to animate responses to clicks, you can achieve the same results using HTML5 or JavaScript.
Flash use requires installation of a Flash plugin in the browser. In Chrome, the Flash plugin is set off by default and users are asked to grant permission before it runs. In Firefox, the Flash plugin will be turned off by default in 2019. In Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer, the Flash plugin will stop running by the end of 2020.
